Indian Geotechnical Society, Ludhiana Chapter

During my training period I got a chance to work on a project  to just polish a website not to add the content to meet the requirements of IGS’s website. IGS stands for Indian Geotechnical Society which is a great society whose aim is to promote cooperation amongst engineers and scientists for the advancement and dissemination of knowledge in the fields of Soil Mechanics, Foundation Engineering, Soil Dynamics, Engineering Geology, Rock Mechanics, Snow and Ice Mechanics and any allied fields related to Geotechnical Engineering and their practical applications.

Our college got a chance to make a website for this. Inaugration of this website was also in our college. It was a great achievement for our college.

Along with me this task was given to three more students: Sandeep Kaur, Navedeep Bagga and  Vigasdeep. We have to just polish the website.  We divided all the work so that we make this website up in a short period (two days).

I have done the following tasks  :

1.Selected the theme: Twenty eleven

1. Installed a plugin to add latest news on sidebar as a widget. Plugin name is  News announcement scroll: This plug-in will create a vertical scroll news or Announcement for your wordpress site, we can embed this in sidebar, Multi language support.

2. Shifted the menu bar at the of header images.

Method:  Edit the header.php file and put the code between  <nav id="access" role="navigation"> ..and </nav><!-- #access -->
below the </hgroup>

3. Removed the search box from the top and put home and contact us button there.

Method: First make the three divisions for logo, Tagline, and home, contact us buttons respectively.
Look for this code block in header.php and comment it.
<?php
// Has the text been hidden?
if ( 'blank' == get_header_textcolor() ) :
	?>
	<div>
	<?php get_search_form(); ?>
	</div>
	<?php
else :
	?>
	<?php get_search_form(); ?>
<?php endif; ?>

For Adding the home and contact Us buttons, Put the images and made the links on that in the third division:

<hgroup>
<a href="http://gndec.ac.in/~igs/ldh/">
<img style="width:101px; float:left; margin: 4px 0px 0px 0px; height:103px;" src="wp-content/uploads/2012/07/logo11.png" alt="logo"/></a>

<div style="float:left; width:77%; ">
        <?php    /*    <h1 id="site-title"><span><a href="<?php echo esc_url( home_url( '/' ) ); ?>" title="<?php echo esc_attr( get_bloginfo( 'name', 'display' ) ); ?>" rel="home"><?php bloginfo( 'name' ); ?></a></span></h1>*/?>
    <h3 id="site-title"><span><a href="<?php echo esc_url( home_url( '/' ) ); ?>" title="<?php echo "navdeep";?>" rel="home">Indian Geotechnical Society | Ludhiana Chapter</a></span>

</h3>    </div>

<div style="float:right; width:10%; ">
                             <a href="http://gndec.ac.in/~igs/ldh/?page_id=148"><img style="width:25px; float:right; margin:5px 0px 0px 0px; height:35px; " src="http://gndec.ac.in/~igs/ldh/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/env.png" alt="contact"  /></a>
                              <a href="http://gndec.ac.in/~igs/ldh/"><img style="width:25px; float:right; margin:10px 20px 17px 0px; height:20px; " src="http://gndec.ac.in/~igs/ldh/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/home1.png" alt="home"  /></a>
                              </div>

<div style="width: 50%; float: left;"><h2 id="site-description"><?php bloginfo( 'description' ); ?></h2></div>

</hgroup>

In the above code, Fisrt division for logo, 2nd for Title and third for home and contact us buttons.

4. Added the logo in the header against the title.

Method: Explained above.

Thats it. Though I have done little work But learned a lot about wordpress. Also came to know about the plugin: NextGEN Gallery which is used to add the photo gallery.

Rest of the work was done by Navdeep Bagga. Graphics was designed by Sandeep Kaur. Files on the server was managed by Vigasdeep.

Finally site was up in two days. 🙂
